The Empathetic Characteristics Comparison between Eastern Undergraduates and Western Undergraduates

ABSTRACT

Aim: In order to compare Chinese empathetic characteristics with American ones. Method: Using Basic Empathy Scale and Interpersonal Reactivity Index for the purpose of measuring their empathetic traits, sixty Chinese undergraduates and sixty-two American undergraduates are selected, and to measure Chinese undergraduates’ and American undergraduates’ projective empathy by looking at pictures of different cultural typicality, eighteen pictures are selected. Result: In the aspect of cognitive empathy, American undergraduates’ scores are significantly higher than Chinese undergraduates’ in Basic Empathy Scale (t = 3.65, p < 0.05); American undergraduates’ scores are significantly higher than Chinese undergraduates’ as for the perspective of taking scale in Interpersonal Reactivity Index (t = 2.495, p < 0.05); there is a significant difference between Chinese undergraduates and American undergraduates when facing typical eastern cultural pictures and no biased cultural pictures, and Chinese undergraduates’ scores are higher than American undergraduates’ (t = 2.718, p < 0.01; t = 2.811, p < 0.01). Conclusion: There exists empathetic difference between Chinese undergraduates and American undergraduates. Culture influences empathetic description.

中美大学生共情特征的比较

摘 要

目的:比较中美大学生的共情特点。方法:使用基本共情量表BES和人际反应指针IRI问卷,对60名中国大学生和62名美国大学生进行施测,比较中美大学生的共情特点;选取ESP-MTTI中的18张图片材料,比较中美大学生对不同文化典型性图片的投射性共情。结果:在BES上,美国大学生的认知共情得分显著高于中国大学生(t = 3.65, p < 0.05);在IRI的观点采择维度上,美国大学生的得分显著高于中国大学生(t = 2.495, p < 0.05);中美大学生对“东方典型性图片”和“无明显文化偏向图片”存在差异,中国大学生显著高于美国大学生(t = 2.718, p < 0.01; t = 2.811, p < 0.01)。结论:中美两国大学生的共情存在差异;文化影响共情描述。

1. 引言

共情是灵性生物存在的普遍现象,是利于种族延续的进化机制,是社会认知中的重要概念。大多数研究者都认为共情包括认知和情绪成分(黄翯青,苏彦捷,2010,2012)。然而文化背景对社会认知--共情是否存在影响?目前已有的跨文化共情实证研究得出的结论不一致,甚至相反(Atkin et al., 2016),如Shali Wu发现集体主义文化下具有更高的观点采择能力(Shali et al., 2007),Soto发现认知共情并不存在文化差异(Soto et al., 2009)。为了探讨不同文化背景下共情特质的差异或是否因描述不同带来的差异,本研究采用结构化的共情量表和投射式的图片对中美大学生被试进行施测,以比较中美大学生的共情特点。

2. 方法

2.1. 对象

随机抽取中国某大学大学生60名,男性21名,女性39名,M = 20.85;随机抽取美国某州立大学生62名,男性26名,女性36名,M = 20.62。两组被试性别比和平均年龄均相当;采取自愿参与的原则,心智均正常。

2.2. 研究工具

2.2.1. BES (Besic Empathy Scale)

基本共情量表是Darrick编制。共20个条目,分为认知和情感共情两维度。在法国、意大利验证具有较好的结构和信效度。引入中国对青少年群体进行检验,信效度达到心理测量学的有关要求,量表具有较好的信效度(张海形,孙炳海,2010;黄续,周萍,2014)。

2.2.2. IRI (Interpersonal Relationship Index)

由Davis编制的人际反应性指针(IRI)包括四个维度,分别是观点采择、共情关心、想象和个人痛苦。在跨文化的研究中,它的结构得到了很好的验证。引入中国进行修订时,进行了信效度检验,保留了22个题(张海形,孙炳海,2010)。

2.2.3. ESP-MTTI

ESP-MTTI是共情半投射测试问卷,其采用Christina结构方程模型分析发现,用单一的维度就可以解释整体的共情。图片材料取自中国小学母语教材插图。工具所有的图片在熟悉度、唤醒度、情绪性上有相同的效价,具有良好的信效度(李浩,周萍,2012;黄续,周萍,2015)。本研究选取21名心理系硕士评定图片的“文化典型性”,挑选典型东西方和无东西方文化偏向的图片各6张,方差分析结果显示三组图片的文化典型性差异显著,因此作为本研究的“投射性共情”的研究工具。

3. 结果

3.1. 中美大学生在BES量表上共情得分比较

t检验结果显示,美国大学生被试在BES量表上的认知共情得分高于中国大学生被试(t = 3.65, p < 0.05),见表1

3.2. 中美大学生在IRI量表上共情得分比较

t检验结果显示,美国大学生被试在IRI量表上的观点采择得分高于中国大学生被试(t = 2.495, p < 0.05),见表2

3.3. 中美大学生在ESP-MTTI图片上“投射性共情”的特点

中美大学生在东方、西方、无偏向文化典型性图片上的差异比较见表3。中美大学生在东方文化、无偏向东西文化典型性图片上的得分差异显著,在具有东方意味和无偏向的图片上,中国大学生被试得分显著高于美国大学生被试。

4. 讨论

有研究者从进化的角度和已有的实证研究证实,情感共情是一种古老的情绪能力(潘彦谷,刘衍玲,2013),本研究显示而在中美大学生在情感共情上不存在显著差异,证实情感共情的普遍存在,但似乎美国大学生被试具有更高的认知共情,这是否可能与共情认知成分的机制有关,或者仅为在表现形式上存在由文化(结构化量表的言语描述)带来表达的差异?Friedlmeier和Trommsdorff对2岁的德国和日本女孩的研究发现,与德国女孩相比,日本女孩表达出更多的痛苦和不能调整他们的痛苦反应。Trommsdorff,Friedlmeier和Mayer发现来自于他人导向的文化团体的儿童(印度尼西亚和马来西亚)比来自于个人取向的文化团体的儿童(德国和以色列)展现出更多的个人悲伤,但没有观察到在共情关心方面的文化群体差异(Trommsdorff et al., 2007)。Tracy G. Cassels的研究发现:西方人比东方人具有更多共情关心,但是具有更少的个人悲伤(Cassel et al., 2010)。因此似乎美国大学生具有更多的共情关心,中国大学生具有更多地个人悲伤,本研究结果与其他研究结果一致。

对共情的自上而下的认知成分解释的机制主要是心理理论和观点采择,认知共情依赖于后天的社会认知,自出生至成年期呈现上升趋势,在老年期逐渐下降(黄翯青,苏彦捷,2012;Trommsdorff et al.,2007)。在对比大样本的研究,也得出和本研究一致的结论。比如,2011年发表的采用元分析方法对1979~2009的共情研究进行汇总分析,涉及72个样本量,13,737个美国大学生,其中在2009年,观点采择、共情关心均值美国大学生分别为3.36与3.64 (Neummann et al., 2016)。将它与2010年一份样本为529的中国大学生的观点采择与共情关心的研究(张凤凤,董毅,汪凯,詹志禹,谢伦芳,2010),发现中国大学生得分都比美国大学生低。一份2016年发表的涵盖67个国家样本量为104365的研究发现,中国人的共情均分略低于美国人(M中 = 3.54,M美 = 3.7,t(77,697) = 3.47,p < 0.001,d = 0.27),将该研究得出的数值与另一研究结果(Neummann et al., 2016)对比,中国被试的得分也低于美国被试的均值。研究者发现,在个体主义国家的共情得分比较中,美国人的共情得分有点异常的高。该研究者的结论是在63个国家中,高共情国家的人具有更高集体主义、宜人性、责任性、自尊、情绪性、主观幸福感和亲社会行为,跨文化中,共情是嵌套在心理特质、情绪体验和表达、亲社会行为的广泛法则网中(Chopik et al., 2016)。至于中美之间由量表测量出的得分差异到底是由于语言还是本身由文化等因素带来的差异需要进一步采用更加严谨的设计和巧妙的测量方式探究。

有研究表明,在集体主义得分高的人并不比在集体主义得分低的人更好的理解他人的心理,情绪状态以及对他人的感觉、需求,有更多的关心,共情整体从个人层面而言并不是集体主义的一个必要的属性(Realo et al., 2002)。美国大学生具有更高的认知共情得分可能与其文化有关,美国文化比较开放和多元,崇尚探索和体验新鲜事物,可能对多角度思维有一定的因素。在一份在全世界63个国家的研究指出:开放性与观点采择具有相关的边缘显著性(Chopik et al., 2016)。美国重要的“万圣节”也是鼓励扮演不同角色的人,或许对换位思考的认知有一定的促进作用。另一方面这种差异可能是与语言表述方式有关。Ma-Kellams (2012)发现,东方人比西方人更能准确的推断亲密他人的情绪,但欧裔美国人比东亚人更能准确的推断陌生人的情绪。大量的研究也表明,东方人倾向于不关注与自己没有关系的人的感觉(Chen et al., 1998; Chen et al., 2006; Yuki et al., 2005)。尽管BES有题目提及到“朋友”,但是也有许多题目是对不熟悉他人的情绪的判断,比如“当某人情绪低沉时,我经常能理解他们的感受”。IRI有大量的题目是对不熟悉他人的判断,比如“在做决定前,我试着从争论中去看每个人的立场”,因而本研究在BES和IRI的认知共情上显示美国大学生被试的得分高于中国大学生被试可能是由于文化或语言(描叙)带来的。

研究已证明,人类对陌生人的疼痛具有共情反应(Preston et al., 2002; Decety et al., 2004; Gallese, 2006; Leiberg et al., 2006; Bastiaansen et al., 2009)。然而种族偏见和刻板印象可能改变成这种对特定种族缺乏感觉运动共振的反应(Feagin et al., 2001; Cosmides et al., 2003; Xu, 2009; Preston et al., 2002; Haslam et al., 2006; Fiske, 2009),即共情的缺乏。很多研究都证实这一现象,不论是行为学上还是神经反应的研究(Golby et al., 2001; Lieberman et al., 2005; Chiao et al., 2008; Van Bavel et al., 2008)。社会心理学的研究也认为:极端的种族主义者通常表现出共情的缺乏(Feagin et al., 2001; Cosmides et al., 2003)。越来越多的研究指向文化是共情种族内团体偏好的原因(Chiao & Mathur, 2010)。以上种种研究发现是否可以理解为共情的情感成分不存在跨文化的差异,而认知成分的差异可能来自于文化本身,或者量表的语言表达因素,因此本研究第二部分的设计以图片作为的共情的测试材料将更好的回避了语言而不是共情本身造成的测量差异。本研究显示,中美大学生被试对带有东方文化意味和中性意味的共情投射材料的反应得分具有显著差异,中国大学生得分显著高于美国大学生,西方文化典型性图片也来自当代中国小学母语教材,显得更为亲切,因此不难理解中美两国大学生得分的无显著差异。中国人评定的“无文化偏向图片”是一些中国小学语文教本内的动物类型图片,中美大学生的得分差异可能与被评价对象是东方人有关,或许西方人不一定将此评定为“无文化偏向图片”,因此可以理解美国人与中国人在“东方文化典型性图片”的得分差异是文化习俗带来的,也就是说人们对种族内团体产生更高的共情。有研究显示采取给被试呈现种族内团体和外团体的图片,结果发现面部EMG、皮肤导电、心跳等生理指标以及观看时间的数据都支持内团体共情偏好,即在看到种族内团体图片的快乐和不快乐图片时,被试都会产生更高的快乐或不快乐(Lisa et al., 2006)。当然二者共情差异其他影响因素尚需进一步进行探索。

基于本研究的样本较小,本研究试图查阅其他研究者的数据进行对比分析时,注意到IRI和BES都是几十年以前编制的量表,而中国引进这些量表并进行修订都是近十年内的事情,故未将地域年代差异太大的常模进行比较。另外在对比数据时,不同的研究者即使采用相同的研究方法,不同的被试数量、不同的时期以及被试的来源的差异可能都会影响比较的结果。
