Abstract: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odorous compounds discharged into the environment create ecological and health hazards. In the recent past, biological waste air treatment processes using bio- reactors have gained popularity in control of VOCs and odour, since they offer a cost effective and environ- ment friendly alternative to conventional air pollution control technologies. This review provides an overview of the biofilters that are used in VOC and odour abatement, along with details on their configuration and design, mechanism of operation, insights into the microbial biodegradation process and future R&D needs in this area. Keywords: VOC; Odor; Biofilter 生物滤池在处理 VOCs 和异味气体中的应用研究进展* 陈晓亮 1,戴 祥2,王 欣2,孟瑜磊 3,席北斗 4,王世平 1# 1中国农业大学食品科学与营养工程学院,北京 2中国环境保护部,北京 3航天投资控股有限公司,北京 4中国环境科学研究院,北京 Email: pieroo@126.com, #Wang74447@163.com 收稿日期:2011年11 月8日;修回日期:2011 年11 月22 日;录用日期:2011 年12 月7日 摘 要:挥发性有机物(VOCs)和异味气体的排放对生态环境和人类健康都会造成极大的危害。生物 处理方法与传统方法相比不仅节省资源而且对环境污染少,在处理 VOCs 和异味气体领域备受推崇, 其中生物滤池法更是一种简便有效的方式。本文对用于 VOCs 和异味气体处理的生物滤池法的各项参 数、构造、生物降解过程及未来发展需求等方面进行了综述。 关键词:VOC;异味气体;生物滤池 1. 引言 加和工业的发展,急需能够净化VOCs 和异味气体的 设备,同时迫切需要政府针对环境问题进行立法,督 促企业对废气进行处理达到排放标准。与传统的物理 和化学处理方式相比,生物处理比传统的焚烧、吸附 法不仅更节省资源而且对环境污染少,拥有巨大的优 势,因此备受推崇[1-3]。 挥发性有机物(VOCs)和异味气体不仅对人类健 康造成了危害,也对环境造成了污染。随着人口的增 *基金项目:“十一五”国家科技支撑计划(2009BADC2B02)。 #通讯作者。 34 Copyright © 2012 Hanspub 生物滤池在处理 VOCs 和异味气体中的应用研究进展 净化空气 污染空气 填料床 营养液 根据要处理的废气的种类及处理量的要求,产生 了几种不同的生物反应器,在工业释放的可挥发性有 机物和气味处理中扮演了很重要的角色。尽管有很多 构造不同的生物反应器,但常规的类型主要包括生物 滤池、生物滴滤器和生物洗涤器。新型生物反应器如 近些年发明的生物膜反应器[3-5]。尽管不同的生物反应 器废气处理的基本机理都是相似的,但在微生物的使 用(如生物膜的形成)、填充介质、污染物的浓度等方 面仍然存在不同。 本文针对生物滤池的优缺点、重要参数、生物降 解过程及未来发展需求等方面进行了综述。 2. 生物滤池(Biofilter, BFs) Figure 1. Schematics of a biofilter unit 生物滤池是使潮湿的污染空气通过生长有能够 降解污染物的微生物的多孔填充床,达到臭气处理目 的的一种装置(图1)。污染气体通过多孔填充介质时, 接触到介质中微生物形成的生物膜,在膜上发生生物 氧化作用。 图1. 生物滤池结构 用来处理 VOC 和异味气体的生物滤池有两种不 同设计模式。开放式设计的生物滤池采用上升气流, 安置在产生 VOC/异味气体装置的外部。这样的反应 器需要较大的空间,同时易受天气气候改变的影响。 密闭式设计采用上升或下降气流,安置在密闭的空间 内,相比开放式设计,需要较小的空间。 生物滤池被广泛地用来处理工业废气、城市废气 中多种有机和无机污染物。过去,生物滤池常被用来 处理污水处理厂和垃圾堆埋区的异味气体,近年来在 多种挥发性有机物和异味处理中得到广泛应用,异味 气体如氨、硫化氢、硫醇、二硫化物等,VOCs如丙 烷、丁烷、苯乙烯、苯酚、氯化乙烯、甲醇等。小试 规模和中试规模的实验证明生物滤池能够处理 189 种 危害性空气污染物(HAPs)中的 60 种[1,3]。 3. 生物过滤过程 生物过滤过程包括几个过程,首先是废气从气相 传送到水相中,然后进入介质或生物膜,最后在生物 膜中完成 VOC/异味气体的生物降解[1]。影响生物过滤 过程的较为重要的物理、化学和生物学参数主要包括 以下几方面。 生物滤池是处理含有低浓度挥发性有机物或异 味气体的空气流较大的典型装置,它的优缺点如表 1 所述。 3.1. 污染物的传质和分离 Table 1. Merits and demerits of biofilter 生物过滤进程的第一步是把污染物从空气中转 移到水相中,这不是一个限速步骤,因此常假定气液 两相处于平衡状态。采用亨利法则分离平衡时空气和 水,公式如下: 表1. 生物滤池优缺点 优点 缺点 成本较低 (操作费用和建设费用较低) 悬浮颗粒可能引起介质阻塞 压力损失小 介质退化问题 能够处理含有低浓度挥发性有 机物或异味气体的大量空气 处理高浓度污染物时效率低 不产生二次污染气体 湿度和 pH难以控制 gii li CHC Cgi——气相中污染物i的浓度,Hi——亨利系数, Cli——i在液相中的浓度。 由于采用无因次的亨利系数,不同的报道中关于 亨利系数的描述不同,若物质的亨利系数超过0.01 则 认为是易挥发的,并且亨利系数越高,此物质在水中 Copyright © 2012 Hanspub 35 生物滤池在处理 VOCs 和异味气体中的应用研究进展 的溶解性越低。比如,报道中称氨在25 ˚C下的无因 次亨利系数为0.0005,硫化氢为0.92。亨利系数决定 于液相温度和化学势[3]。 一般来说,生物滤池的处理能力随着亨利法则常 数的升高而下降,因为这表明了气体在发生生物降解 作用的液相和生物膜相中溶解度发生下降。 3.2. 生物膜 生物膜是生物滤池的关键因素,因为挥发性有机 物和异味气体的生物降解作用正是在生物膜中进行 的。生物膜是微生物在载体表面生长形成的,能够实 现异化反应从而将污染物转变为无害的产物。 生物膜受很多因素影响,其中包括污染物的类 别、通过生物滤池的气流比例、使用的填料、所使用 装置的设计和构成等。生物膜厚度从10 μm到1 cm 不等,通常观测到的平均厚度为1 mm或稍低[6]。反 应强度随着膜厚度的增加而增大,直至称之为“活性 厚度”的等级时达到最大。超过这个等级,营养物质 的扩散就变成了限制因素[1]。同时有研究报道不同的 稳态和动力学数学模型用以预测生物膜中基质、氧 气、营养物质渗透概况,以便于评估生物膜整体效率 因素[6-8]。 3.3. 生物滤池填料床 填料床是生物过滤的核心部分,因为它提供了微 生物生长的条件。Bohn 证明了理想的填料床应有的特 点[9],其中最重要的特点包括:1) 高的比表面积用于 生物膜的形成和气膜间的传质过程;2) 高的孔隙率便 于气体的相似分散;3) 较好的持水性以防止填料床过 干;4) 可利用的固有的营养物质;5) 存在高密度和 多样性的微生物区系。 泥炭、土壤、堆肥和木屑是最常用的填料。这些 材料符合大部分的描述特点,并且成本低、便于寻找。 这其中每一种材料都有各自的优缺点。土壤的最大优 点是提供了丰富和多样性的微生物菌群,但却只含有 很少的营养物质可供利用,且比表面积较小、底部的 压力较大[10]。泥炭中含有丰富的有机质,且比表面积 大、持水性好、渗透性好,但与土壤或堆肥相比,泥 炭中矿物质含量和微生物菌群多样性较差。堆肥是生 物过滤中最常用的填料,因为堆肥有高密度、多样性 好的微生物菌群,较好的持水性,较好的气体渗透性 以及大量的营养物质,此外,这也是一条循环利用废 弃有机资源的良好途径,比如用废水处理厂的污泥、 森林产品(树枝、树叶、树皮)、家庭残渣等[11],但相 比土壤或泥炭较容易碎裂而变得紧实,堆肥不够稳 定,容易引起填料床的降压过大,这与其他一些现象 共同造成了它的高持水性。一些学者应用木屑或者树 皮作为填料进行了研究[12-15]。但大多数研究者都认为 用这些过滤材料不如堆肥和泥炭结果理想,这被认为 是pH 缓冲能力、低比表面积和低营养物质含量等的 影响。尽管有这样的不同,木屑与泥炭或堆肥联合的 方式仍然在生物过滤中得到的广泛的应用。 为了防止填料垮塌和压实,多数研究者建议填料 应易于保持且较坚固,进而延迟堵塞现象的出现,从 而延长填料床的使用寿命。实际的研究案例中用各种 不同的填料,如木屑[16]、珍珠岩[17]、蛭石[18]、玻璃珠 [19]、聚氨酯泡沫塑料[20]、聚苯乙烯[21]、熔岩[22]等。 Ibrahim 等人将活性污泥固定在凝胶珠上构成填料[23]。 生物过滤对于污染物的处理效率是通过吸收系 数或者分配系数表示的。Tang、Hwang 等人报道中甲 苯在堆肥填料中分离系数为1.43 mg·g–1,硅藻填料中 分离系数为2.00 mg·g–1,谷壳填料中分离系数为0.89 mg·g–1[24]。填料床中的含有活性炭(颗粒状或粉状)能 够使甲苯的吸收系数提高 10~20 倍(颗粒状活性炭中 甲苯吸附系数为50.6 mg·g–1)[24,25]。研究表明添加活性 炭能够提高生物过滤的讲解能力[26],清除疏水组分, 并且能够更好地控制负荷变化[27]。 3.4. 含氧量 在生物过滤过程中,含氧量扮演了重要的角色, 从不同研究者关于氧含量对生物过滤影响研究中可 得出具体的细节。Shareefdeen[28]等人在 1997年研究 中用富含氧气的空气提高了生物过滤的效率,从而论 证了氧气是一个限制因素。另一项研究中,Deshusses[29] 等研究表明当提高空气中氧气含量时,未能显著提高 同时处理甲基乙基酮和甲基异丁酮的效率。这项研究 显著交叉抑制两种物质的生物降解现象表明动力学 效应比扩散效应更为重要。这是一项短期实验,利用 注射器分别将两种组分注射进生物滤池,同时观察交 叉抑制和单独抑制现象。因此,生物过滤中氧气的角 36 Copyright © 2012 Hanspub 生物滤池在处理 VOCs 和异味气体中的应用研究进展 VOCs中含有杂原子(S、O、N)的气体,会转变为 酸性物质而使pH 降低[42],进而影响微生物生长,并 会引起气流下行管道的腐蚀[43]。很多学者观察到类似 的结果[3,44]。Kennes[45]等研究报道在生物滤池中使用 的有机填料中,土壤具有最好的pH 缓冲能力,其次 是堆肥和木屑。泥炭本身呈酸性(pH 3.0~4.0),且 缓冲 能力差。很多学者进行了在填料中添加缓冲材料以保 持pH 在中性的研究,例如碳酸钙[12,13],白云石[14]。 也可以通过用含pH 缓冲液的营养液淋洗填料得以控 制,如 Ca(OH)2、NaOH[19]、NaHCO3 [24]、尿素[46]等。 色趋近特定。对于高性能的生物滤池或当较厚的生物 膜存在时,氧气的影响愈发突出[30]。 在大多数的应用中,生物过滤过程都极力避免厌 氧环境,这是因为即使存在微厌氧环境,也能导致产 生异味气体,而这背离了减少异味气体和VOCs 的总 体目标。但一些研究表明生物滤池中存在偶然产生的 厌氧微环境条件能够帮助降解有机污染物[28]。 3.5. 营养物质 进入生物滤池的污染物形成了微生物活动的主 要碳源和能量来源,氢和氧能够从空气、生长介质、 有时从 VOCs 中获得,其它的主要营养素(N、P、K、 S)和微量元素(维生素、金属元素)则能够部分的从填 料中获得,例如污泥中含有多种营养素。 3.7. 含水率 含水率是生物过滤的关键因素,因为微生物需要 水分实现正常的新陈代谢过程。非最优的水分含量条 件会导致填料床的干涸和裂缝,进而导致沟流和短流 效应[3]。微生物缺水会引起生物降解效率的显著降低, 而水分过多则会引起氧气和疏水污染物向生物膜的 传质过程,进而在填料床中形成缺氧区限制反应效 率。水分含量太高会由于缺氧而导致污臭气体的排 放,由于孔隙体积而引起反压升高,以及填料床中气 体的沟流效应。 前人研究已经证明除填料之外,为了保持适宜的 微生物降解活性,持续地添加一定的营养物质是必须 的。比如,有研究证明长时间持续使用堆肥填料床会 使自带的营养物质逐渐耗尽[31]。营养物质的逐渐缺失 就成了生物滤池长时间使用的限制因素[32,33]。 研究已经证明营养物质供应的生物过滤模型,特 别是氮源供应的模型的可行性[8,32-35]。供微生物生长 所需的营养物质主要有两种形式,一种是固体形态, 直接添加到填料床中[36],或者是溶液形式,溶液形式 的应用更为广泛。Wu[37]等人比较了生物过滤中最常 用的营养物质,包括KH2PO4、NaxH(3–x)PO4、KNO3、 (NH4)2SO4、NH4Cl、NH 4HCO3、CaCl2、MgSO4、MnSO 4、 FeSO4、Na2MoO4、维生素 B1等。考虑到营养元素的 多样性以及影响微生物生长的成分的不同,生物过滤 所需的营养物质选择是很具有挑战性的研究领域。 最适的含水率因不同的填料而不同,主要与介 质、比表面积、多孔性等因素有关。生物滤池的最适 含水率应在30%~60%(以重量计),取决于所用的介 质。保持含水率主要有通过对进入气体进行预湿,或 通过填料床顶部的洒水装置淋湿。先进的控制措施主 要是感应器测定填料床重量进而控制洒水装置。由于 生物氧化过程是一个放热反应,进而可能导致填料床 的干涸,因此需要追加补水。填料的干涸会导致干涸 点的局部扩大,同样导致气体分配不均和微生物活性 降低[3]。最近的研究表明生物滤池的进气口会经受干 燥气体,随着时间推移引起处理效率的下降[47]。 3.6. PH 与很多的生物过程类似,pH 对生物过滤效率有 重要影响。高于或低于最适pH 值,微生物的活性都 会受到影响。生物过滤中绝大多数微生物都是嗜中性 的,最适 pH 为7。Lu[38]等人研究表明苯系物的降解 作用强度达到最大的pH 适宜范围为7.5~8.0。Lee[39] 等也报道苯系物降解的适宜pH 为7.0。Veiga[40]等研 究了不同的pH(3.5~7.0)对烷基苯降解作用的影响,结 果表明降解作用随着pH升高而增强。Arnold[41]等证 明中性环境能够提高苯乙烯的去除。 进气口温度和相对湿度的变化以及污染物氧化 过程的放热都会导致填料的干燥,因此要控制含水 率,需要对此有更好的理解。目前,有很多研究干燥 程度以及对生物过滤的影响的模型,通过对污染物的 浓度、相对空气湿度、温度、介质水分含量的研究, 预测填料中水分散失,从而得出代谢产热、进气口气 流相对湿度变化、生物过滤效率降低程度等实验结果 [1,8,48,49]。 Copyright © 2012 Hanspub 37 生物滤池在处理 VOCs 和异味气体中的应用研究进展 3.8. 微生物 微生物是生物降解VOCs和异味气体的催化剂。 对VOCs 的降解过程中,大量研究证明多为异养微生 物(多数为细菌和真菌)。填料中的接种量决定于填料 的自身特性和微生物对所要处理的 VOCs 的降解能 力。很多研究者都喜欢利用在填料床上生长较好的生 态系统[32,33,46,50]。经过适应期后,对VOC 的抗性菌种 能够被自然的选择出来,然后在填料床中对其进行评 估。其它研究中(如对玩抗性VOCs),研究者在填料床 上接种从污泥中分离得到的或商业购买的或之前生 物滤池中分离得到的菌种,一般情况下,生物滤池中 细菌和放线菌的生物质密度应达到 106~1010 cfu/g[51]。 Pedersen等人以及 Delhomenie 等分别报道了生物过滤 池中具有降解作用的菌种约占总微生物种类的 1%~ 15%[33,52,53]。 3.9. 生物膜结构 VOC 的去除是同时发生在生物膜上的很多相互 依赖的反应共同作用的结果。目前为止,只有很少关 于生物过滤过程中生物膜结构的信息。之前的研究焦 点集中在激光显微镜显示无细胞通道,它是由膜—— 水分界面向下延伸而形成的,能够加快污染物和氧气 的传质过程[54]。用来表征生物膜宏观体系的新技术是 计算机辅助X射线断层摄影技术(CAT)[28]。应用 CAT 扫描处理甲苯的生物膜,发现含有大量固定在聚苯烯 鲍尔环上的生物质呈现不均匀分布,而其他区域生物 质厚度小于1 mm。进一步的图像解析显示空气/水通 道大小在 5~380 mm2。未来研究中,高分辨率 CAT 扫描技术能够对生物膜结构的分析起到显著作用,这 就能加深对污染物传质过程的理解,最终设计形成更 为优良的填料[28]。 4. 结论与展望 生物滤池已经被证明是一项节能、费用低、能够 处理一系列排放气体包括VOCs 和异味气体的技术。 但也有必要进行技术革新,比如对VOCs 和异味气体 预处理以去除颗粒状物质、提高生物降解能力、优化 处理技术以能够处理更复杂的气体组分,特别是多种 污染物的混合体。此外,在其基本原理得到很好的理 解之前,生物滤池就得到了广泛应用,导致一些不成 功或非最优条件的大型生物过滤池的存在,造成了一 定的资源浪费。对生物过滤进程基本原理的研究不断 深入,但仍然存在目前无法解答的原理问题,包括生 物量转移的定量分析,生物降解动力学关系及影响这 种关系的各因素,生物滤池的复合生态的复杂性,以 及污染物、氧气、必要的营养物质间相互依赖的关系 [30,54]。这些因素都被证明能够显著影响生物滤池的性 能和稳定性,这就需要进一步的研究,特别是定量研 究是很必要的,这将会使现代生物技术得到广泛应 用。此外,对传质和传热过程、生物膜中扩散系数、 气液滞留进行相关研究以对生物滤池进行设计改造。 传统现象学模型的研究最好与实际问题,如理化现象 之上的结构知识细节问题,发展、测试、验证所需的 大量实践问题进行结合。因此,利用生物启发计算技 术设计生物过滤过程的一般数学模型进行可靠的定 量预测和设计最优化条件是很必要的[55,56]。最后,需 要克服的最大问题是如何将基本的理论研究投入到 实际生产过程中。 5. 致谢 在此感谢中华人民共和国科学技术部“十一五” 国家科技支撑计划(2009BADC2B02)对研究的支持, 感谢中国农业科学研究院环境保护与可持续发展研 究所、中国环境科学研究院在研究过程中提供的合作 支持。 参考文献 (References) [1] J.
